Introduction

The DAP&E was initiated in Institute for Medical Research (IMR), Malaysia in 1970. Yearly, the DAP&E is conducted for a duration of 6 months. For 2024, the course will be held on 23 April 2024 until 3 November 2024.

The course was designate to train medical doctors, scientists, researchers and other health personnels in basic and advance Parasitology and Entomology, as well as skills in conducting research, diagnostic services and approaches in control programmes.

The aim of the course generally is to provide knowledge and practical training on pathogens of major significance to public health and to enable participants to apply scientific approach and critical thinking to diagnose, prevent and control infectious diseases. The course will facilitate and strengthen institutional and national capabilities in medical diagnostic laboratory services, research and human resource development. It is also hoped that this course will encourage networking between the various participants’ institutions and ours to foster exchange in expertise and collaboration in research projects.

For the session 2023/2024, the Dean of DAP&E is Dr Mohd Khadri bin Shahar, Head Unit of Medical Entomology, IMR and Dr Noor Azian bin Md Yusuf, from Parasitology Unit, IMR.

Objective:

The objective of the course generally is to provide an overview of the major parasitic diseases of man and their vectors.  The training provided would enable the participants to:

i) Understand, interpret and apply the basic epidemiological and statistical methods, haematology, immunology and molecular biology,

ii) Understanding of the biology and the life cycles of the major parasites and of their vectors or/and intermediate hosts,

iii) Identify (diagnosis) of the major parasites, vectors and intermediate hosts of some parasitic diseases using basic and molecular approaches,   

iv) Understanding the pathogenesis and pathology of the major parasitic diseases and the immune responses to these parasites,

v) Appreciate the epidemiology of the major parasitic infections,

vi) Appreciate methods available for chemotherapy and control of the parasitic diseases,

vii) Comprehend methods used in the studying of medical entomology in the laboratory and in the field,

vii) Enable to conduct own research projects.

Course Venue

The course will be held at the SEAMEO-TROPMED Regional Centre for Microbiology, Parasitology & Entomology, Institute for Medical Research (IMR), National Institutes of Health, Setia Alam, 40170 Shah Alam, Selangor Malaysia.

Course Methodology:

The course consists of lectures, demonstration, hands-on laboratory practical and field trips to collect samples and study visit, preparation of dissertation, conduct short research project, post module assessment, and final examination (consist of theory and practical assessment)

Course Fee:

The DAP&E full course fee is RM18,500.00 (exclusive of food and accommodation). The fee must be paid in advance prior to the commencement of the course.

SEAMEO TROPMED Scholarship only available for the officers of the Malaysia Ministry of Health. For those who want to apply the scholarship, they must apply through the Training Division, MOH (Bahagian Pengurusan Latihan, BPL, KKM).

iii) Other sponsorship

The Head Department / Health Organization of the candidates is advised to write to potential scholarship agencies such as WHO, Global Fund, Welcome Trust, APMEN, and etc for getting scholarship for their officers to participate in the DAP&E 2024.  

Candidates who have received sponsorship from any agencies are required to write the sponsorship agencies names in the DAP&E application form (please find the attached form below).

SEAMEO TROPMED Scholarship is available to applicants from ASEAN member countries only. The applications must be applied through the applicant’s government/Ministry of Health/Health Department to the SEAMEO-TROPMED Secretariat Office Bangkok.
