In line with the mission of COMSTECH;

The objectives of INTROM are:

  1.      To promote the exchange of information on tropical medicine among Muslim countries,

The beginning of INTROM started  in 1985, when the then H.E Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir  Mohamad informed Dr. Ali Kettani, Director General, Islamic Foundation for Science Technology and Development (IFSTAD), that Malaysia, agreed to take part in OIC’s Standing Committee on Science and Technology Cooperation Programme and named IMR  as part of the Networking for Tropical Medicine.

In January 1987 during the OIC meeting held in Kuwait, Tropical Medicine was identified as one of 6 areas justifying the establishment of “INTER-ISLAMIC NETWORKS” and the meeting agreed with the establishment of a network on Tropical Medicine and its secretariat in Malaysia represented by Institute for Medical Research (IMR).

In October 1987, Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation, Malaysia, organized   a follow up meeting, with IMR, IFSTAD secretariat,  and representatives from Pakistan, Iraq and Senegal, this meeting led the formation of  INTER-ISLAMIC NETWORK ON TROPICAL MEDICINE (INTROM).
