The unit of Biotechnology of Institute for Medical Research was established in 1 October 1992. Initially it existed under the name of the Division of Malaria and Filariasis. With the restructuring of the IMR, Biotechnology Centre was then named Unit of Biotechnology. The aim of the unit is: to facilitate research in biotechnology through the provision of relevant biotechnological techniques; to strengthen capabilities of the unit in terms of man-power, technical skills and acquisition of equipments required in biotechnological research; and to provide training in biotechnological techniques for researchers and students. The unit also coordinates industrial training of students from local universities (government and private sector). The unit also holds the responsibility of maintaining quality standards in research management (MS ISO 9001: 2008) in IMR, through awareness campaigns and regular internal and external units.
