The Acarology Unit was established towards the end of 1967 with the intent to conduct research on the taxonomy, biology, ecology and distribution of Acari, especially that of trombiculid mites, mesostigmatid mites and ticks. Over the years, the scope of research shifted to the biology, distribution and control of Acari of medical importance. The Unit actively seeks and conducts collaborative research with both local and foreign institutions.

The Unit offers a number of services that include identification of Acari and evaluation of products for the control of Acari. Training is provided on a regular and ad hoc basis on various topics such as identification of ticks and mites, and specific laboratory and field techniques used in Acarology research.
