INTRODUCTION

The Specialised Diagnostics Centre (SDC) is envisaged to be the National Reference Centre for medical laboratories. The Centre will also serve as a service laboratory to clinical researchers in hospitals in the Clinical Research Centres Network. In the medium to long term, the Centre will focus on developing new molecular diagnostic tests and kits and to generate genomic databases for infectious diseases; developing new diagnostic tests including application of molecular techniques for diagnosis of various inborn error of metabolic diseases; and using molecular techniques and mutational analysis of DNA to facilitate early diagnosis and management of inborn errors of metabolic diseases.

OBJECTIVES

The SDC aims: to provide highly skilled and refined diagnostic services to the health system in Malaysia; to strengthen and increase the diagnostic capabilities in terms of the range and number of diagnostic tests to achieve shorter response time by using state of the art technology; and to continue research and development of new diagnostic methods through research in response to the continuing progress in medicine.
