The Herbal Medicine Research Centre (HMRC) was established in 2001 to provide scientific evidence for the efficacy and safety of herbal products. Since a variety of plant species has been reported to have medicinal values, it is appropriate that the HMRC be the repository for information on such species in the country. The long-term goal of this Centre is to embark on the drug discovery programme. Current research activities include: using cell tissues culture in pre-clinical evaluation of herbal extracts; s trengthening the capability in the safety evaluation of herbal product using both in-vivo as well as in-vitro systems; and strengthening the capability in various phyto-chemical analysis and structure elucidation for the purpose of identification of active constituents as well as standardization of herbal products.
The objectives of the HMRC are: to scientifically prove the efficacy and safety to standardized herbal products; to coordinate various research and activities relating to Herbal Medicine Research in Malaysia; to establish a Malaysian Repository which provides information pertaining to medicinal plants such as database of R&D researches and research findings and Herbal Pharmacopoeia; and to contribute to the discovery of new drugs from Malaysian herbs/medicinal plants (Drug Development).
