The first IMR trip to Pulau Aur in March 2002, by a fishing boat. It was a 6 hour journey from Mersing jetty to the island. Leptoconops were found at the beaches.

 

 

Control activities against Leptoconops sp in Johore islands. The boat was heavily loaded with fogging and spraying equipment and with personnel. It was a collaboration with the Public Health Department of Johor e and the Marine Police. This was towards the end of March 2002.

A boat was rented for the study on biting midges at some beaches on Pulau Aur and Pulau Dayang islands. This was in early March 2002.

A photograph showing some cows which may a contributing factor to the high number of biting midges at some of the islands off Johore. A preliminary study showed that there were no Leptoconops found biting the cows; neither were they detected in cow dung.

 

An Entomology staff was bitten by a biting midge. The itchiness lasted up to 3-4 weeks.

Phlebotomus sp sand fly is indigenous in Malaysia. This sand fly is the main vector for leishmaniasis in India, Bangladesh, Sudan, etcetera. No indigenous case has been reported in Malaysia.

 

A renovated cave which serves as a temple at Ipoh, Perak, where a sand fly survey was carried out.

 

A limestone cave was identified as a main habitat of the Malaysian sand fly. Two personnel were photographed fixing light traps at Gua Musang, Kelantan.

 

A recreational park in a limestone area at Ipoh, Perak was also surveyed for sand flies.

The Ipoh Society for the Protection Against Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is located in a cave in Ipoh town. A sand fly survey was conducted by the road side.
