Bioassay Unit| Introduction | Research |
INTRODUCTION
The unit is entrusted to develop various bioassay facilities for screening, confirmation and elucidation of the mechanism of action of plant extract, fraction and compound for its medicinal properties. The main capability started with anti-malaria, anti-cancer and anti-bacterial properties. This will be strengthen to include anti-hypertensive and anti-proliferative. The research activities include various biological testing (In vitro and In vivo) using standardized assay procedures to determine the biological properties and medicinal potentials of medicinal plants either as extracts or in pure chemical constituents. Some of the activities includes:
Screening of medicinal plants for anti malaria properties in vitro and its efficacy evaluation in animal model and screening for their toxicity potential in vitro towards normal cells.
The elucidation of the mechanism of action of the extract to the malaria parasite using the Heme Polymerization Inhibition Assays and Lipid Peroxidation Test.
Screening of medicinal plant extracts for their potential in inhibiting the growth of proliferative cells.
In vitro investigation/prediction of Biotransformation of the drug/chemicals in the liver (from treatment rats) using the subcellular fractions of liver such as cytosol and microsome and from rat cultured hepatocytes.
OBJECTIVES
To carry out Research and Development of medicinal plant products for anti malaria, anti cancer and anti bacteria properties.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
To strengthen and developed many cell based assays for biological properties in vitro and efficacy studies in vivo to determine bioactivity and medicinal potential of herbal plants either as extracts or in pure chemical constituents.
- To carry out research on medicinal plant products/herbal preparations for anti malaria, anti cancer, and anti bacteria properties through in vitro biological screening, in vivo efficacy test, and mechanism of action determination.
