Introduction to Allergy Unit

. Last Updated: 25 April 2016Hits: 40170

The AIRC has established the first and only allergy clinic within the Ministry of Health. It is located at the Otorhinolaryngology (ORL/ENT) Clinic, Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) and the collaboration is between IMR and HKL.

The Allergy Clinic offers allergy care for both adults and children who suffer from allergy related diseases such as atopy, asthma, hay fever, sinusitis, rashes, hives, or reactions to foods or drugs. The Clinic receives patients mostly from the Klang Valley and also from other parts of Peninsular Malaysia.

Research is also carried out on new local allergen productions and more than 50 local allergens have been produced and used in Skin Prick Testing (SPT) to aid in diagnosis and management of allergic patients. Upon request, these local allergens are also supplied to other government hospitals which perform the SPT.

List of specialized diagnostic tests:

  • Skin testing
  • Total IgE
  • Specific IgE (previously done by RAST test)
  • Mast cell tryptase test
  • Basophil activation test (for drug allergy)
  • Eosinophil cationic protein
