Introduction

The Molecular Pathology Unit was established in 1996, primarily to harness the latest advances in molecular biology and to use new cutting edge technologies in the biomedical sciences to carry out research on diseases in the country.

A major focus of the Unit is on nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), 5th most common cancer in Malaysia, for which very much less research is carried out worldwide compared to other major cancers.  In line with the National Strategic Plan for Cancer Control Programme (2016-2020) of the Ministry of Health Malaysia, the Unit focuses on research on NPC to improve prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of NPC.  The Unit also carries out collaborative research on other major cancers. The Unit utilizes and provides expertise on technologies to support cutting edge research as well as establishes platform technologies and develops pipelines for cancer research.
