Introduction
Immunogenetics is the study of the relationship between genetics and the immune system. The complexity and sophistication of both these systems and their interaction give rise to a number of challenging research questions. The Immunogenetics Unit conducts research and provides specialized diagnostic services for transplantation programs nationwide. The laboratory was setup in 1985 and we support both the bone marrow and solid organ transplantation. HLA typing is also provided for non-transplant purposes. All typing is performed using molecular techniques. The Immunogenetics Unit also oversees and works closely with the Malaysian Marrow Donor Registry (MMDR) now renamed the Malaysian Stem Cell Registry (MSCR). We test both for related and unrelated donors from the MSCR as well as for cord blood transplants. The Immunogenetics Unit is involved in training health care professionals in transplantation
Objective(s) /Research thrust(s)
The Immunogenetics Unit provides:
- pre transplant testing services for bone marrow and solid organ transplants to determine compatibility
- post transplant services for solid organ transplants
- testing for patients going overseas or for siblings of patients who are overseas
- testing for diseases associated with HLA alleles as well as HLA alleles associated with adverse outcomes in patients
Our research focuses on disease associations and population genetics. We are identifying and determining the frequency of the alleles found in local populations as well as disease associations with aplastic anemia, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
